JOB SUMMARY

The Forestry Field Operations unit is responsible for forestry operations programs and services including preparing management plans for approximately 23,000 acres of forests including wetlands, environmentally sensitive areas, fish habitat, rare and endangered plants, etc., as well as city-wide forest maintenance operations.  

You are responsible for the performance of duties related to the maintenance, repair, pruning, removal and disease control for City of Ottawa trees and shrubs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of Grade 12 plus 20 weeks of additional formal training in planting, maintenance and removal of trees in the urban landscape

Minimum of 2 years of tree climbing and pruning experience

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Certified Tree Worker with International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) within the timeframe determined by the employer
Valid Ontario Exterminator licence - Land extermination in the following classes: Forestry, Landscape and Industrial Vegetation within the timeframe determined by the employer
Valid Ontario unrestricted DZ class driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated
Mobile Crane Operator 0-8 ton (P930030) training certificate
Current Standard First Aid, CPR and/or AED certificates
Safety training for working in close proximity to power lines approved in Ontario
Electrical and Utilities Safety Rules training certificate
Valid Ontario unrestricted AZ class driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated is an asset
Must complete all required on-the-job training/certifications (e.g. WHMIS, fall arrest, confined space entry, etc.) within the timeframe determined by the employer. 

KNOWLEDGE

  • Corporate tree policies, for protection, planting and maintenance
  • ANSI Standards in relation to arboriculture practices
  • Standards and regulations for working around energized conductors
  • Ontario Traffic Manual, Book 7 for Temporary Conditions
  • Chainsaw and arboricultural equipment maintenance
  • Current arboricultural practices and systems for tree biology, care and diagnosis
  • Rigging with ropes, slings, chains and cables
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers

COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Must possess the technical capabilities to perform the duties of the position
  • Ability to drive/operate vehicles, equipment, machinery and attachments as outlined in the light, medium, heavy and special categories as listed in the attachment to the collective agreement, and as relevant to the functions being performed for this position
  • Ability to complete field reports
  • Be able to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Must be able to be transferred to other operating divisions as required for either short or long-term assignments to perform equivalent or related duties
  • Effective interpersonal relationship with other workers, supervisors, other agencies and the public
  • Reliable with sound judgment
  • Diplomatic and discreet when dealing with staff and the public
  • Must possess the physical capabilities to perform the duties of the position
  • Be “on-call” outside normal working hours including nights, weekends and statutory holidays
  • Work overtime as required and assigned
  • Work in all weather types to perform duties

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Language Requirement: English oral, reading, writing       
  • Driver’s License Requirement:  A valid Ontario unrestricted DZ class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated  
  • You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.
