JOB SUMMARY

French Language Services is responsible for the planning, development and implementation of strategic and business initiatives related to Council approved By-Law 2001-170 and the Bilingualism Policy for the corporation, and works with City departments to ensure that programs and services meet the linguistic and cultural needs of Ottawa’s French speaking population and with Francophone umbrella organizations and French speaking community groups/networks to promote/assist with access to City programs and services. FLS also provides interpretation, translation, revision and terminology services to the Corporation and Council.

You provide translation, revision, proofreading and editing services to all departments within the corporation, as well as to council. You also proof and revise all translation work completed by external translators for the corporation. You are part of the production team for promotion material for the corporation and verify that the use of the French language is accurate and is appropriate for the target audience.

In addition, you provide advice and assistance on the appropriate use of the French language; research and establish French terminology for city programs, services and projects; and maintain the terminology bank for the corporation that is used by staff and external translators.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of 4 year university degree in Translation (English to French, French to English)

Minimum of 5 years of experience in translation/revision

KNOWLEDGE

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in French and English, including editing and proofreading skills
  • Translation theory and practice
  • Rules and usage of French and English (written and spoken)
  • Franco-Ontarian context
  • Ability to use various types of research tools including the internet
  • MS Office Suite
  • MultiTrans or any other translation memory 

COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Provide advice and respond to requests for technical terminology, grammar, style, etc.
  • Ability to translate approximately 1,500 – 2,000 words per day using an electronic keyboard
  • Ability to revise 4,500-6000 words per day
  • Translate a variety of documents in either of the two official languages while maintaining the tone, level of language and technical accuracy of the piece
  • Proofread and revise work done by others, and correct and edit own work
  • Provide advice and feedback on linguistic issues
  • Maintain quality control
  • Possess organizational skills and flexibility to plan, organize and prioritize own work, and to deal effectively with multiple demands, conflicting priorities, pressures and deadlines
  • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and excellent telephone manner to communicate complex grammar rules or terminology
  • Possess computer literacy in MS Office Suite in a Windows environment, including use of intra/internet

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Language Requirement: Designated Day 1 Ready – immediate requirement for language proficiency: French: oral, reading, writing required. English: oral, reading, writing required. Candidates must meet language requirement for position upon hire.
