JOB SUMMARY

The Infrastructure and Water Services Department is responsible for implementing city-building priorities from planning and delivering infrastructure projects, managing assets and investments, and providing residents with high-quality drinking water, the collection and treatment of wastewater, and ensuring storm and surface water is efficiently managed. Building a better Ottawa for all to enjoy, today and into the future.

You assist with the collection of water quality or other environmental samples, and the installation and operation of monitoring equipment, using established criteria and protocols. Sites include watercourses and stormwater management facilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Post-Secondary Student (completion of first year college or university) Completion of one (1) or more years of university or community college education in an Environmental Science or Civil / Environmental Engineering program, or acceptable related discipline with suitable practical experience. Must be returning to school in the fall.

Minimum of 4 months but less than 8 months of related experience is required

Previous experience with water quality sampling, environmental management, regulatory compliance, storm water management concepts, preparation of field inspection reports, data analysis and review, is desired but not essential.
    

KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of techniques for the collection of environmental samples and conducting inspections; general field safety practices; and environmental impacts related to stormwater, wastewater and industrial discharges.
     

COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and verbally.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment. 
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to perform physical labour tasks in the performance of the duties; such as opening manholes, traversing embankments and the loading/unloading of equipment.
  • Must supply own CSA-approved, green patch safety work boots.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Language Requirement: Various language requirements, locations may require English only, French only OR Bilingual competencies. Some positions require English oral, reading, and writing. Some positions required French oral, reading and writing.       
  • Driver’s License Requirement:A valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated 
  • Must supply own CSA-approved, green patch safety work boots
