JOB SUMMARY

The City Archives is a state-of-the-art central facility supporting several municipal and community operated, decentralized satellite centres, that transfers public records of the City of Ottawa and acquires and preserves private records of archival value. The Archives unit delivers archival services by the identification, acquisition, arrangement, description, preservation and management of civic government records and data that have long-term value for the City for legal, historical or other research purposes, and of private records of archival value from local individuals, organizations or businesses that enhance our understanding of the history and evolution of Ottawa, for the benefit of future generations.

Under the direction of an Archivist, you provide assistance with the appraisal, arrangement, description, preservation, and making available of civic and community archival records in the custody of the City of Ottawa Archives. You also assist with the physical control of archival holdings and the day-to-day operation of an archives reference service.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Post-secondary Student - completion of first year college or university in History or related discipline / Museum Studies / Archival Studies

Minimum of 4 months but less than 8 months of related experience in a client-service environment.

KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of Canadian history
  • Knowledge of the use of archives and/or museums in historical research

COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Familiarity with database environments, standard software packages
  • Ability to follow established procedures and data entry standards
  • Able to work independently and in teams
  • Able to lift and carry at least 16 kg (35 lbs.)
  • No significant allergies to dust or mould which cannot be mitigated
  • Access to reliable, efficient transportation for use in the performance of job duties is required

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Language Requirement: Various language requirements, locations may require English only, French only OR Bilingual competencies. Some positions require English oral, reading, and writing. Some positions required French oral, reading and writing.       
  • Police Record Check: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters Check with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction.; Police record checks completed by a third-party company will not be accepted.
