JOB SUMMARY
Environmental Health Protection and Outbreak Management is responsible for implementing Ontario’s Public Health Standards with a focus on environmental health protection, infectious diseases and outbreak management, as well as relevant regulations under the Health Protection and Promotion Act (HPPA). The Environmental Health unit develops, implements and evaluates inspection services and programs, and is responsible for enforcement of relevant federal, provincial and municipal legislation and Public Health policy.
You are responsible for monitoring and enforcing provincial and municipal legislated standards of public health protection, environmental sanitation and occupational health and safety; helping to prevent and control the occurrence of communicable diseases and exposure to toxic agents in the environment; and promoting optimal health in the community.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of 4 year year university degree in Environmental Health
Minimum of 12 weeks of field training obtained at a health unit/department
KNOWLEDGE
- Knowledge of health related legislation
- Knowledge of related environmental health issues
- Ability to inspect establishments such as food premises and public pools, and record results of findings
- Prepare reports, compile data and maintain records
- Undertake special projects as assigned

- Self motivated
- Excellent interpersonal and conflict management skills
- Good problem solving skills
- Capable of handling a high volume, multi-task workload
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Language Requirement: English oral, reading, writing
- Police Record Check: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters Check with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction.; Police record checks completed by a third-party company will not be accepted.
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated
- You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.
