JOB SUMMARY

The mandate of Transit Services is to provide a safe, reliable, comfortable, courteous, and affordable transit service for all, to build and retain an engaged workforce, and to meet the policy objectives set by Council and the Transit Commission, all within established budgets and in accordance with all regulatory requirements.

You are responsible for managing, evaluating, and improving safe, reliable, efficient, timely, and cost-effective transit vehicle maintenance, in order to support federally regulated transit services within the city, including the development, implementation and evaluation of related plans, policies, guidelines, systems, processes and procedures.   
 
You are responsible for managing financial and human resources including contracted services and stakeholder and partner relationships.  You respond to questions from the general public, customers, councillors, senior staff and represent the city at public meetings. 
 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of a 4-year university degree in in Business or Public Administration, Transportation planning, Industrial Engineering, or another related field. 

Minimum of Ten (10) years of related experience in vehicle maintenance operations in transportation, including a minimum of 5 years in the management of human and financial resources preferably within a large, unionized transportation system.
 

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Valid Ontario Certificate of Qualification as Truck and Coach Technician 310T or Automotive Service Technician 310S is an asset

  • Legislation, regulations, policies, standards, and guidelines relevant to the work, such as Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety standards, Society of Automotive Engineer standards, Canadian Safety standards, Ontario Highway Traffic Act regulations, MTO and MOE
  • Industry trends and developments 
  • Business administration concepts, theories, principles, and methodologies 
  • Corporate policies, guidelines, and practices 
  • The various Collective Agreements in place at the city
  • Understanding of the programs/services and operations of other City areas, and the inter-relationships between them and own work area 
  • MS Office 
  • Must be familiar with applicable health and safety legislation, have knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the workplace, and have knowledge of appropriate actions to be taken in order to ensure the health and safety of staff in accordance with applicable legislation and City policies and procedures
