JOB SUMMARY

The Surveys and Mapping unit provides corporate legal survey and mapping services in support of the City’s planning, development and infrastructure operations and to enable all City led construction projects. 

You are responsible for functioning as a member of a survey crew and assisting the Survey Technologists in the collection of Topographic and Legal Survey information in the field. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of 2 year diploma in surveying from an accredited college or institution

Minimum of 2 years of experience in either Engineering or Legal surveying 

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated

KNOWLEDGE

  • The Ontario Land Registration System
  • 3º MTM and 6º UTM Coordinate System
  • GPS equipment
  • Electronic Total station equipment
  • Conventional rod and level equipment
  • Provincial statutes relating to surveying
  • Ontario Cadastral Survey Fabric
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers.
     

COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Capable of operating a computer to assist in data downloading
  • Able to read and interpret legal survey plans and base mapping products
  • Must be thorough and meticulous
  • Courteous and informative character when dealing with City staff and public
  • Must demonstrate initiative and responsibility
  • Ensures that fieldwork meets legislative requirements and that the Surveys and Mapping Branch procedural guide is followed
  • Documents observations in a clear and concise manner
  • Ensures that electronic data is stored in a correct manner
  • Performs routine equipment tests on a regular basis
  • Operates City vehicles safely and performs daily maintenance checks
  • Effective interpersonal relationships
  • Tact, initiative, reliability and thoroughness
  • Physically capable

  • You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.
