JOB SUMMARY

The mandate of Long Term Care Services is to provide resident care based on the needs of individuals, as determined by medical, nursing, functional and psychosocial assessments, and on each resident’s expressed needs. The care provided in each Home includes specialized, restorative, supportive and palliative care for persons with dementia, disabilities and health problems who cannot live independently in their homes, and whose needs cannot be met in the community.

You provide support to the LTC interdisciplinary team with resident care and service within the Long Term Care home by providing personal care to residents as a member of the LTC staff team, and other service providers to ensure the physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs of the residents are met, with an emphasis on resident safety and engagement.  

You are responsible for engaging with residents and providing social stimulation interactions through personal care activities for residents, including: supporting the resident with connecting with family and friends via technology; providing dining room and feeding assistance to residents during mealtime in collaboration with food service staff; providing basic food preparation and supporting basic housekeeping and laundry functions at the Home, as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of Grade 12 

Minimum of 6 months of experience working in a geriatric setting and a demonstrated ability to communicate with vulnerable adults with varying degrees of dementia and/or other health conditions

KNOWLEDGE

Safe transfer techniques
Knowledge of the needs of seniors and vulnerable adults
Knowledge of corporate computer software and systems including MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers.

Desirable Qualifications:
Knowledge of Gentle Persuasive Approach techniques
Knowledge of Montessori Methods for Dementia

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Language Requirement: Designated Day 1 Ready – immediate requirement for language proficiency: French: oral, reading, writing English: oral, reading, writing Candidates must meet language requirement for position upon hire.; English oral, reading, writing       
  • Police Record Check: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction.  
  • Driver’s License Requirement:    
  • You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.  
  • Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
