JOB SUMMARY

The mandate of Water Facilities and Treatment Services is to provide treatment and distribution of a sustainable supply of high-quality drinking water and is committed to protecting the environment by collecting and treating wastewater for the health and prosperity of Ottawa.   

You are responsible for general maintenance and repair of assigned Water Services buildings and grounds (referred to as “facilities”), including the water and wastewater treatment plants, the Solid Waste site at Trail Road and their administrative buildings, as well as remote facilities such as pumping stations, reservoirs, elevated tanks and stormwater ponds.

You are also responsible for completing facility inspections and condition assessments, and providing other related support.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of Grade 12

Minimum of 4 years of experience conducting general repairs, maintenance and renovations in an industrial setting

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated
Valid Ontario unrestricted DZ class driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated, for specific positions
Current Standard First Aid, CPR and/or AED certificates
Forklift Operator Licence
Hoisting and Rigging training certificate
Chainsaw Operator Safety training certificate
Must complete all required on-the-job training/certifications (e.g. WHMIS, fall arrest, confined space entry, etc.) within the timeframe determined by the employer. 

KNOWLEDGE

  • Tools, materials and equipment used in the general maintenance and repair of industrial facilities
  • Building Code and Fire Code
  • WHMIS
  • Relevant City, ESD, Branch and Unit policies, processes and procedures
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers

  • Safely operate or handle the required tools, materials and equipment used on the job
  • Operate a personal computer and use Markview, Marval and general office applications (i.e. MS Office)
  • Complete all required documentation
  • Calculate the amount of materials

  • Read and understand facility drawings, sketches, manufacturer’s or supplier’s instructions and manuals, contract specifications and other work-related documents

  • Use all required personal protective equipment
  • Climb and work from ladders  
  • Work in confined spaces, as required
  • Good physical condition

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Language Requirement: English oral, reading, writing       
  • Police Record Check: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters Check (Level 2) with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction.; Police record checks completed by a third-party company will not be accepted.  
  • You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.
  • Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
