JOB SUMMARY

The Financial Services Branch is responsible for the overall delivery of financial services to City departments, Boards, Commissions and Agencies, ensuring that the financial support requirements and financial processing are delivered in a timely, meaningful manner. Services include budget development and monitoring, financial analysis, project management support, financial reporting both internal and external, financial compliance, financial advice and accounting requirements. The Account Management units develop strategic business partnerships and deliver “one-stop-shop” financial support to their client departments to meet operational requirements of the assigned lines of business.

You perform a variety of daily physical, technical and clerical duties to facilitate the efficient, timely and accurate processing of transit fares for the Transportation Services department. This includes the separating of mutilated and foreign coins, validating passes, ticket, and other documents, verifying any foreign currency received and validating the fares on consignment along with revalidating the amount of passes returned. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of Grade 12.

Minimum of 1 year of experience in handling large volumes of cash and other fare products, preparing cash deposits and performing basic accounting and reconciling functions.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Mechanical and/or electrical training that would enable incumbent to perform minor service and repair of coin processing equipment
  • General courses in accounting or bookkeeping
     

KNOWLEDGE

  • Sound knowledge of branch/department mandate, policies, procedures and guidelines with respect to general business and basic accounting practices related to the Cash Office
  • Problem-solving and customer service techniques/city practices
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers

COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Able to work independently with minimum support/direction, and collaboratively with peers as part of a team in an assembly-line type of operation
  • Possess organizational skills and flexibility to plan, organize and prioritize own work, and to deal effectively with multiple demands, conflicting priorities, pressures and deadlines
  • Able to identify and assess problems and to use analytic and problem solving skills to deal with mechanical problems and recommend solutions
  • Possess computer literacy in MS Office Suite in a Windows environment, including use of Intra/Internet
  • Able to use corporate SAP systems and other databases to manage information that is accessible and used by the branch
  • Possess keyboarding skills
  • Communicate effectively
  • Able to demonstrate speed, accuracy and thoroughness in working with figures, and attention to detail
  • Able to organize, clean and maintain a safe work area
  • Possess a work record of good attendance and job performance
  • Physically fit with stamina to perform the job duties (which may include working in a standing position for long periods of time and require the physical capacity to lift/move loads weighing up to 50 pounds)
  • Able to tolerate exposure to moderate amounts of noise and dust, and work in a windowless environment
  • Able to wear/work in a required pocketless uniform, safety footwear and hearing protection

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Language Requirement: English oral, reading, writing       
  • Police Record Check: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters Check with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction.; Police record checks completed by a third-party company will not be accepted.  
  • Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
