JOB SUMMARY
You are responsible for providing assistance and support in the administration of the Sewer Use Program that includes the Industrial Waste and the Hauled Waste sections. Your work involves the collection of water quality and other environmental samples from storm, sanitary and industrial discharges, and the installation and operation of monitoring equipment using established criteria and protocols.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum age of 16 years is required for Summer Student jobs
Post-Secondary Student (completion of first year college or university) Environmental Science or Civil / Environmental Engineering Program
Minimum of 4 months but less than 8 months of related experience is required
KNOWLEDGE
- Knowledge of proper sampling procedures and protocols.
COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Interpersonal communication skills for dealing with general public
- Operation of a small vehicle (car/van/pick-up) in the performance of duties
- Able to perform physical labour tasks in the performance of the duties such as opening manholes, traversing embankments, loading/unloading of equipment and deployment/retrieval of sampling equipment from sewer locations.
- Proficient with MS Word and Excel
- Ability to work effectively and safely with minimal supervision
- Ability to work effectively and safely in a team environment
- Attentive to observations and able to record details
- Able to express opinions and make suggestions
- Use tact and discretion in dealing with co-workers and the public
- Initiative and reliability in performing the duties of the position
- Students must supply own CSA-approved, green patch safety work boots.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Language Requirement: Various language requirements, locations may require English only, French only OR Bilingual competencies. Some positions require English oral, reading, and writing. Some positions required French oral, reading and writing.
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated
