JOB SUMMARY
The Transit Fleet and Facilities Maintenance team provides safe, reliable, efficient, timely and cost-effective transit vehicle maintenance services to support federally regulated transit services within the City. The Materials/Warranty Management section manages the Transit Services Purchasing Operations & Warranty Programs, including materials management and warranty administration, inventory management, tool purchase/management, procuring and expediting goods & services, and maximizing the proceeds of disposition of surplus and obsolete materials.
You are responsible to secure, maintain and issue materials used in day-to-day operations, and identify, locate stocks, issue and secure materials used by Transit Fleet and Facilities Maintenance clients, as an entry/junior level Storekeeper.
Incumbents enter this job at the trainee level. Trainees fulfill a minimum of 6 months on-the-job training, acquiring knowledge and learning the skills required within the occupation. They are expected to become familiar with the computerized Materials Management System and knowledgeable about the use of parts books, the locations of parts bins, the locations and uses of tools, and the names and usage of parts.
The incumbent starts at the Storekeeper 3 position. He/she gets a 6 month training period. After the 6-month training, they work a full year as a Storekeeper 3. Upon completion of the year, they are tested and move up to a Storekeeper 2 position. From this point, they work an additional year as a Storekeeper 2. Upon completion of the year, they are tested and move up to a Storekeeper 1 position.
From the date they begin their new position, it requires a minimum 2.5 years to move up from a Storekeeper 3 to a Storekeeper 1.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of Grade 12
Some related experience is an asset
Training sequence is:
- 6 months initial training, acquiring knowledge and skills required, then a written test will be administered after 12 months as a Storekeeper 3 before a candidate will progress to the level of Storekeeper 2, from this point, they work an additional year as a Storekeeper 2. Upon completion of the year, they are tested and move up to a Storekeeper 1 position.
Enterprise wide systems (ERP) exposure is an asset
Previous clerical experience is an asset
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES
KNOWLEDGE
- Bus, truck and automobile part names and uses
- Uses of tools
- Uses for Automotive Parts books
- Inventory control and an understanding of the importance of inventory accuracy and security
- Warehousing techniques
- Safe and effective operation of forklifts and other vehicles in accordance with manufacturers' guidelines, legislated requirements, city policies, procedures and directives
- Basic computer skills in MS Office Suite in a Windows environment, including use of MOE and the Internet
- Some understanding and knowledge of Maintenance Management Systems and software
- Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers
COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Possess computer skills and the ability to use software packages dealing with Internet, Outlook e-mail, Word, Excel
- Possess basic mathematical skills and be able to demonstrate general accuracy and verification abilities
- Possess willingness to learn numbering systems and patterns and item location addressing systems
- Possess willingness to acquire knowledge in order to use Automotive Parts books
- Possess willingness to acquire knowledge in order to maintain inventory accuracy
- Possess effective interpersonal and communication skills
- Possess neat and legible handwriting
- Understand and execute oral and written instructions
- Able to learn to observe differences in written copy and recognize errors
- Must be certified to operate a forklift and drive delivery trucks as required
- Demonstrate a willingness and determination to be trained in this occupation

- Ability to work in environments that are physically challenging (e.g. continuous standing and walking, twisting, reaching, climbing ladders etc.) while tolerating environmental extremes and dirty environments.
- Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job set out in the Job Demands Analysis (e.g. working in a standing position for long time periods, intermittent lifting, physically moving or maneuvering parts/materials in a bus garage environment where parts such as batteries can weigh up to 90 lbs).
- Able to work overtime and be available for unplanned overtime, and to work a variety of scheduled shifts, including week-ends and nights, as per the collective agreement
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Language Requirement: English oral, reading, writing
- Police Record Check: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters Check (Level 2) with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction.; Police record checks completed by a third-party company will not be accepted.
- Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
