JOB SUMMARY
Ottawa Public Health is responsible for providing public health programs and services that contribute to the physical, mental and emotional health and well-being of the residents of Ottawa, in compliance with Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care standards, protocols and guidelines and other related public health legislation. In partnership with the people and communities of Ottawa, Ottawa Public Health improves and advocates for health and well-being through prevention, promotion and protection.
Functioning as a member of a multidisciplinary team and reporting to a Program Manager or Supervisor in either Heath Promotion, Healthy Communities or Health Protection, and under the direction of a Public Health Nurse, you contribute to the optimal health of families, individuals and the community by participating in immunization programs and by participating in health promotion, teaching and research.
Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) in the Infectious Disease Program work on the Tuberculosis (TB) Treatment Support Team and:
• Visit clients with TB in their homes to observe them taking their TB medication (DOT – Directly Observed Therapy) and documenting this encounter
• Monitor clients virtually to take their TB medication (eDOT) and documenting this encounter
• Assist with other TB related activities for individuals with active and latent TB
• Support other duties that may be assigned to them within the Infectious Disease Program
RPNs in IDP are mobile workers and can travel anywhere within Ottawa’s boundaries to deliver service.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of 2 year community college Registered Practical Nurse Diploma
Minimum of 1 year as a licensed RPN, including experience supporting immunization activities, including nursing and administrative tasks
Experience working with adults and/or with children and adolescents is highly desirable\

- Apply the nursing process as pertains to the role of a RPN
- Data input and process general administrative work using Microsoft Word
- Organize and prioritize work assignments to meet deadlines
- Communicate effectively with clients, co-workers and other health professionals
- Organize and transport equipment and supplies, and provide support to RN's in the immunization process
- Work co-operatively and effectively in a team environment
- Effectively and professionally interact with children, adolescents, parents, school officials and or adults/volunteers and the general public
- Self-motivated individual, takes initiative and remains calm in pressure situations
- Flexible to work in an environment of changing priorities
- Sensitive and open to the different values and beliefs of a multi-cultural client base
- Professional in dealing with the public, co-workers and other health professionals
- Caring, empathetic and able to re-assure and calm children/adolescents through the immunization process
- Committed to providing a high level of service to clients
- Work at various locations within the City
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Language Requirement: Designated Day 1 Ready – immediate requirement for language proficiency: French: oral, reading, writing English: oral, reading, writing Candidates must meet language requirement for position upon hire.
- Police Record Check: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3) with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction.; Police record checks completed by a third-party company will not be accepted.
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated; This position requires the successful candidate to use their own transportation.
