JOB SUMMARY


Rail Operations manages the delivery of diesel and electric rail services, including management of the thirty-year P3 contract with the Rideau Transit Maintenance Group for the rail maintenance contract for the LRT system, ensuring safe and reliable operations that meet service standards, comply with all regulatory safety and operating requirements, and provide a safe, reliable, efficient, effective, on time, courteous and cost-effective rail service to a growing and diverse City of Ottawa. Rail Systems oversees the life cycle management and implementation of capital projects within Rail Operations. 

You are responsible for providing subject matter expertise for rail signaling, train control and communication systems to the City's current and future O-Train light rail transit systems. You monitor and inspect the performance of the rail signals and related systems, and measure the performance of the system against the maintenance contract. 

You also: oversee the work of contractors; provide direction and comment to system expansions; complete technical review of rail signaling and control system failures; track reliability issues and identify trends to the Management team.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE


Completion of 3 year Engineering Technology diploma in Electrical, Computer or related field.
University degree in Electrical, Communication or Computer Engineering is desirable

 

Minimum of 6 years of experience with rail signaling & train control systems. 

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) is desirable

KNOWLEDGE

  • Deployment, operation, and/or maintenance of communication-based train control and communication systems
  • Understanding of system upgrade processes, configuration management, change management, regression testing, and safety certification to support greenfield and brownfield deployment of train control systems
  • Train control systems including communication-based, automatic train protection, centralized traffic control, block and cab signaling, track circuit technology, wireless technology, and communications equipment. 
  • Understanding of light rail systems integration issues including integration between train control, traction power, tunnel ventilation, and rail communication systems
  • Data collection, validation, analysis, and uses
  • Project management methodologies, tools and standards, including those methodologies, standards and tools that are specific to rail systems
  • Applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers
  • Familiarity with control center equipment / operating environments is desirable
