JOB SUMMARY

The mandate of Economic Development and Long-Range Planning Service is to work in collaboration with key stakeholders to define how the city will evolve and grow, through the development of policies, regulations, and economic development strategies to meet the needs of current and future populations, and to position Ottawa as a sought-after location for investment and employment.

You serve as an ambassador and facilitator of the city’s nightlife economy and lead the implementation of the Nightlife Economy Action Plan that aims to develop a foundation from which Ottawa can build on its competitive strengths and address challenges in the development and delivery of nightlife infrastructure, amenities, and experiences. You balance community safety and well-being, quality of life and commercial vibrancy across the city between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

You liaise with other corporate branches and departments; other cities; local, provincial, national and international agencies; the private sector and other levels of government in order to oversee the initiation, development and implementation of partnerships related to nightlife development in terms of safety, cultural tourism/industry initiatives, economic development and commercial vibrancy while embedding inclusivity, diversity and creating opportunities to foster socio-economic growth and prosperity.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of a 4-year bachelor university degree in either Hospitality, Tourism, Business Administration, Commerce, Economics, Recreology, Public/Business Administration, Recreation, Leisure Studies and or related fields.

A minimum of 5 years’ experience in the public or not-for-profit sector, economic development, urban planning, arts and culture or community organizations that intersect with the nightlife economy. 

KNOWLEDGE

  • Methods used to interact with the media and elected officials in a professional and inclusive manner that considers the best interests of the City
  • The City of Ottawa’s organizational, governance and administrative structures
  • Familiar with, and experience with legislation, regulations, policies, standards, guidelines, and community initiatives relevant to key and diverse nightlife sectors, including illegal, illicit and prohibited activity 
  • Industry trends and developments
  • Business administration concepts, theories, principles and methodologies
  • Corporate policies, guidelines, practices and systems, such as MS Office
  • Experience with, and understanding of project management principles, specifically the development, management and execution of multi-stakeholder and complex projects
  • Understanding of the programs/services and operations of other City departments and the inter-relationships between them and Economic Development Services
  • Must demonstrate understanding of the City’s Community Safety and Wellbeing Plan, and must lead and model inclusivity, diversity and equity  
  • Must be familiar with applicable health and safety legislation, have knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health and safety in the workplace, and have knowledge of appropriate actions to be taken to ensure the health and safety of staff in accordance with applicable legislation and city policies and procedures
