JOB SUMMARY
Legal Services provides a comprehensive and complex range of legal services to elected officials, all City of Ottawa departments, and various boards and commissions (i.e. Ottawa Police Services Board, Ottawa Community Land Development Corporation and the Ottawa Public Library), in the areas of civil litigation, labour and employment law, prosecutions, and corporate, municipal, planning, development, environmental, and commercial law.
You are responsible for providing research services and other administrative and clerical support to lawyers in the carriage of duties and responsibilities. In addition, you manage a number of special projects on behalf of the assigned work unit
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of 2 year Legal Assistant course
Minimum of 5 years of directly related legal experience, preferably in a Litigation/Labour Law or Corporate /Commercial Law environment
KNOWLEDGE
- Knowledge of general and legal office practices and procedures, file systems and general office equipment
- Knowledge of Microsoft Suite, SAP, PeopleSoft, Westlaw and other legal research applications
- Knowledge of corporate, development, environmental law or labour relations and labour law practices and procedures
COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to effectively communicate with other city staff, law firms, arbitrators, other government agencies and the general public
- Ability to draft and prepare legal documents and court forms
- Demonstrated research and analytical abilities and problem-solving skills
- Ability to exercise sound judgment
- Ability to work independently, set priorities, organize work and meet deadlines Must be tactful, discreet, and able to ensure confidentiality of information
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Language Requirement: English oral, reading, writing required.
- You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the terms and conditions.
- Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
