JOB SUMMARY
The Forest Management unit is responsible for the City’s urban and rural forest programs and services including the Urban Forest Management Plan to manage the preservation, maintenance, and enhancement of the city’s urban and rural forest cover.
You are responsible for the implementation of tree planting programs and community outreach related to urban forestry in the City of Ottawa. Through the City’s tree planting programs, you plan and implement tree planting along streets, in parks and at City facilities, administer tree planting grant programs and implement planting strategies according to established guidelines.
You review and comment on site plans and provide effective recommendations for appropriate species and locations to minimize operational impacts and ensure sustainability of projects. You also supervise consulting and contracted services, lead teams on a project basis, and contribute to ongoing service delivery and service improvement initiatives in the branch.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of 4 year degree in Landscape Architecture.
Minimum of 4 years of experience in landscape architecture including 2 years in the field involved in the management of landscape installation in an urban environment.
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES
KNOWLEDGE
- City, Department, and Branch policies and procedures pertaining to municipal landscape management
- Landscape design principles, tree and landscape installation, and maintenance best practices
- Provincial and municipal government legislation as it applies to landscape operations, such as Forestry Act, Weed Control Act, Pesticide Control Act., Municipal by-laws
- Horticulture, arboriculture and landscape maintenance life cycle principles and procedures
- Arboriculture and horticultural issues in landscape design, construction and maintenance
- Site development and government approval processes
- Plant Health Care (PHC) principles
- Project management principles and techniques
- Research methods
- Computer applications, including but not limited to MS Office, SAP, and AutoCAD and GIS
- Corporate financial and procurement procedures and policies
- Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers.

- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated; This position requires the successful candidate to use their own transportation.
