2024 City of Ottawa Summer Student Employment Program  

The 2024 Summer Student Employment Program is accepting job applications starting February 1, 2024 to February 29, 2024, for most positions. Applications for positions in Recreation, Culture and Facility Services will be accepted until August, 30 2024.

The City of Ottawa 2024 Summer Student Employment Program offers eligible students the chance to work, learn new skills, and create new connections. An eligible student is considered to: 

  • be legally eligible to work in Canada; 
  • be 16 years of age or older by the first day of summer employment
  • be 15 years of age or older for employment with the Ottawa Public Library  
  • be 15 years of age by the end of the current calendar year (December 31) for employment in certain positions in Recreation, Cultural & Facility Services  
  • be enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary program or institution of higher learning on a full-time basis, returning to school or graduating that same year; and 
  • if a part-time student in university or college, your transcript must indicate that the course of study is leading you to a degree or diploma. 

Each position listed may have other hiring criteria. Please be sure to read the qualifications as part of the application process. 


Summer student hiring process

Step 1: Application phase 

All applicants are given the opportunity to apply online starting February 1. You can view your applications in your candidate profile.

Step 2: Assessment phase 

Online applications will be reviewed and assessed beginning in March and will continue throughout the summer for jobs in RCFS. All applications are reviewed, and the interview process may begin for qualified applicants. If selected for an interview, you will be contacted by email and/or telephone as per the information provided on your candidate profile. 

Step 3: Hiring decision and selection phase 

For applicants that are successful in the assessment phase, credentials and job specific qualifications will be reviewed to confirm Summer program eligibility

Step 4: Hiring and documentation phase 

Once credentials are collected and verified, a job offer will be made.  Successful applicants will then be asked to view and accept their offer online and to complete mandatory hiring documentation. Hire dates for Summer Students may begin as early as April 1 for some positions. It is important to have a Social Insurance Number and Personal Banking Information available.


Important facts and information

  • The City of Ottawa does not accept unsolicited, late or incomplete online applications. Consideration for employment will only be given for jobs in which an application has been submitted. 
  • Applicants are only contacted should they be selected for an interview. You can view the status of your applications in your candidate profile. 

Vulnerable Sector Check or Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check

Applicants are advised that a Vulnerable Sector Check or Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check may be required prior to being hired into a summer student job. If it is required for a summer student job, this information will be included on the job posting.

Police record checks completed by a third-party company will not be accepted. 

Documents required prior to being hired: 

  • Proof of student status (such as a transcript) 
  • Proof of age 
  • Proof of Certifications and/or Credentials (if required for the job, refer to the job posting) 
  • Successfully completed Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJM) or a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) (if required for the job, refer to the job posting).
