Salary Information: $92,918.28 - $109,431.14 annually. (2023 rates of pay)

Overall Purpose

Reporting to the Manager of Data Analytics, the UX/UI (User experience/ User Interface) Specialist is responsible for:

  • Developing design solutions that cater to the organization’s members and its stakeholders incorporating organizational branding, member, and public perception, as well as the effectiveness of each product being delivered based on content, context, and audience. 
  • Leading the UX/UI and design direction of major innovative projects at Ottawa Police Service as well as lead the growth of this space within the Service.
  • As a member of the Analytics Enablement Team, the UX/UI (User Experience / User Interface) Specialist reports to the Manager of Data Analytics. 

 

This role is an integral part of developing data-driven solutions that improve operational decision-making, enhance community safety, foster transparency, and build trust.
 

Major Responsibilities

Develop design solutions that cater to the organization’s members and its stakeholders incorporating organizational branding, member, and public perception, as well as the effectiveness of each product being delivered based on content, context and audience. 

  • Use human centered design to improve digital citizen services, police officer and service staff tools.
  • Contribute to needs analysis, requirements definition, and solution design.
  • Gather and evaluate user requirements from managers, developers, and main stakeholders.
  • Creates user research plans, recruit participants, facilitates user research, analyzes findings, and delivers insights.
  • Conduct user research, user stories and user journey to support design work at the organization.
  • Translates user research to product iterations.
  • Deliver creative design concepts and facilitate design workshops, persona development and client journey mapping sessions as well as developing storyboards, sketches/wireframes, and prototypes.
  • Visualize and design user interface for web, desktop and mobile applications and produce designs based on user feedback and technical constraints.
  • Produces UX and UI design elements for various internal and external digital solutions.
  • Illustrate design ideas using storyboards, process flows, and sitemaps.
  • Plan and execute usability testing & stakeholder interviews to solicit feedback from external users and internal teams.
  • Design mock-ups for desktop/mobile, create interactive prototypes Typography, Iconography, Color theories.
  • Conceive, design and develop visually appealing and dynamic user-centred interfaces.
  • Design, develop, test and certify applications, programs and media design. 
  • Creates documentation for digital solutions and collaborates with the digital team and product owner to build consensus on direction that best addresses a superior user experience.
  • Creates engaging user training assets.

Leads the UX/UI and design direction of major innovative projects at Ottawa Police Service as well as lead the growth of this space within the Service.

Participates in the development of project scope. 

  • Develops project schedules and resource requirements for UX/UI projects for the review and approval of the Project Leader. 
  • Assists in monitoring the status of project plans.
  • Assists in the preparation of project budgets and contracts. 

Assists in the selection of consultants and vendors to provide Hardware / Software peripherals and applications.
Presents and justifies design decisions made by the team and shows the decision-making process is user and data driven.
Provides supervision, guidance, advice and training to analysts, researchers, and others in the organization on user interface design of applications and products.

  • Collaborates with team members across disciplines and units.
  • Contributes to the continuous improvement of design thinking practice at the Service.
  • Maintains current knowledge of trends in technology and introduces new approaches as appropriate.
  • Performs typical duties inherent to the position.
     

Statement of Required Qualifications

Education

  • Completion of a four (4) year university degree in graphic design, digital design, visual communication, or other design-related fields or relevant experience.


Experience
Five (5) years previous experience in progressively responsible related positions, including two years in system development, database and analysis and two to three years in prototyping and requirements analysis including:

  • Product and design decisions that are driven by a deep concern for the customer and a passion for human-centered design.
  • Demonstrated participation in a design team and specific outputs such as user research plans, personas, user journeys, user test plans, wireframes, prototypes experience and other assets produced during your human centered design experiences building digital solutions.
  • Experience with UX design tools
  • Presenting to various audiences (Senior leadership / Users / Technical / Non-Technical) and facilitating various workshops.
  • Experience analyzing, interpreting data and presenting it visually and producing data models.

 

Language

  • English – fluency in oral, reading, and writing.

  • Complex problem and use user centric methods to arrive at an exceptional user experience solution.
  • Figma, Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator), InVision
  • Web technologies such as CSS, HTML, JavaScript, and React.
  • Microsoft Office Software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Visio, and Outlook).

 

In depth awareness of:

  • Typography, layout, colour, and all other elements of design.
  • Designing around data sets and reusable components/patterns.

  • Work is performed in a standard office / police environment with minimal adverse working conditions.
     

Desired Qualifications

  • Oral, reading, and writing fluency in French or other languages.
  • Experience in training and educating clients to use customized applications.
  • Experience working in Agile Product Development.
