Salary Information: $65,432.64 - $77,062.44 annually. (2024 rates of pay)

 

It is expected that the competition components will be held tentatively around mid of May'2024.

Overall Purpose

Under the direction of the Supervisor Fleet Services, the Fleet Attendant is responsible for transporting personnel, shuttling vehicles to facilitate servicing, performing routine vehicle maintenance including tire service, conducting activities in support of a key management program, assisting in the up-fit and decommission process of OPS Fleet Services assets. 

Major Responsibilities

Performs various functions related to vehicle administration and routine maintenance including:

  • Monitor and maintain police vehicle equipment and vehicle contents (first aid kits / fire extinguishers / water safety kits / breaching kits etc).
  • Perform minor vehicle maintenance such as changing of headlights, taillights, wiper blades, checking and adding fluids, measuring tire tread life, adjusting tire pressures and other minor vehicle maintenance as required or directed.
  • Perform tire, wheel and rim installations (mounting/balancing) and related service.
  • Affix or remove decals from OPS assets.
  • Perform interior and exterior cleaning of all OPS vehicles as well as refuelling 
  • Arrange for tow trucks to pick up police vehicles (breakdowns, MVAs)
  • Arrange for tire service vendors to attend service calls for flats, general service or repair including roadside service 
  • Identify vehicles contaminated by blood and other biological hazards, pre-spray with biological disinfectant and clean as per procedure. 
  • Retain vehicles required for servicing / repair as directed by the Supervisor Fleet Services.
  • Collect and record vehicle defect reports submitted by OPS members and record fresh damage to vehicles / equipment.
  • Communicate with users to facilitate the servicing of vehicles and deliver/pick-up vehicles as directed.
     

Major Responsibilities (continued)

Maintain a clean and safe workplace and carry out work place safety inspections comprised of conducting and submitting to Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) Fleet area work place safety inspection reports confirming:

  • All fire extinguishers are properly stored / mounted, visible, not blocked and are tagged showing expiry date.
  • All Eye wash stations are in working order, clean and are accessible.
  • All power hand tools and other shop tools / equipments are in working order and are not missing any safety devices, guards and are inspected as per procedures(where applicable).
  • All power cords, air hoses, water hoses and tools are properly secured.
  • All personal protective equipments are available for use and are in working order.
  • All Electrical receptacles are in working orders and of proper type as per code.
  • Ensure all Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) products being used in the areas have proper labels.
     

Major Responsibilities (continued)

Respond to inquiries from members of OPS and the public.
Maintain current knowledge of National Capital Region geography to drive / operate motor vehicles to meet OPS operational requirements including:

  • Pick up and deliver vehicles and parts to dealerships, City of Ottawa garage and or any other facility as required or directed.
  • Transport and set up Command Vehicle, ensuring the vehicles operational readiness for next use.

Transport members of Executive to various functions as required.
Perform other duties as required or directed.
 

Statement of Required Qualifications

Education

Completion of Grade 12 Secondary High School diploma or General Equivalency. 
Experience and formal training combined may substitute for stipulated education requirements.

Experience

Minimum of one (1) year experience performing routine vehicle maintenance in a commercial automotive service environment; tire, wheel and rim installations (mounting / balancing) or enrolled in automotive mechanic apprenticeship program (310S or 310T), including six (6) months experience transporting, shuttling vehicles. 

 

 

Certifications and Licences

  • Possess a valid Ontario or Quebec Provincial Driver’s License.
  • Candidates will be subject to successfully passing the two stage driving test administered by the OPS Professional Development Centre.
     

In service Training

The following mandatory training and education is provided to all employees of the OPS:

  • Occupational Health & Safety.
  • Respectful Workplace. 
  • Violence in the Workplace.
  • Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).
  • Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). 

Training on specialized fleet management databases will be provided.
Training and accreditation as an Automotive Tire Service Technician as recognized by the Ontario Tire Dealers Association (OTDA) or the Tire Industry Association (TIA) if required.
Other mandatory training will be provided as required by legislation of corporate policy.
 

Job Knowledge

  • General knowledge of the National Capital Region Geography as it relates to the transporting of vehicles.

Hours of Work

Occasional requirement for weekends and Statutory Holidays and other irregular hours to meet operation requirements

Effort and Working Conditions

  • Work requires lifting and transporting vehicle parts, inventory and supplies including tires, wheels and rims.
  • Requires bending to check various vehicle fluids.
  • Kneeling and / or bending to conduct minor vehicle repairs, i.e. changing headlights.
  • Dirty, noisy, garage atmosphere subject to exhaust fumes and inclement temperatures
  • Limited contact with prisoners.
  • Work environment consistent of a working garage.
  • Must be able to work independently, with minimal supervision, as well as within a team environment. 
  • The incumbent must be able to work shifts as designated in the “Hours of Work” section of the job description.
  • Must be able to operate a police vehicle safely and within standards, including maintaining a valid Ontario or Quebec Provincial Driver’s License.  
     

Desired Qualifications

  • Oral, reading, and writing fluency in French or other languages.
  • Experience in large commercial fleet operations, fleet service and vehicle maintenance.
  • Experience in asset management and tracking.
  • Working knowledge of MS Excel.
  • Experience in automotive machine shop or welding.
