Special Constables work in various sections within the Ottawa Police including Court Security / Temporary Custody, Court Liaison Section.
Court Security
Court Security Constables are responsible for the safe transportation and custody of persons being moved between detention facilities and other locations. They also ensure the safe and secure custody of persons in custody at the Ottawa Police Central cellblock facility and with specialized training, can take DNA samples and/or fingerprints.
Court Security Special Constables can work within three different environments of the Ottawa Police:
- 161 Elgin St. the Ottawa Court House detention cell block
- 474 Elgin St. the Ottawa Police Central Division cellblock facility
- 100 Constellation Dr. the Provincial Offences Court referred to as POA Court
Court Liaison
Special Constables in the Court Liaison Section are responsible for serving subpoenas, summons to witnesses and charged persons including conducting investigations to locate individuals when necessary as well as various other documents.
Special Constables in this section also get the opportunity to liaise with investigators and front line officers to exchange information as they relate to witnesses. Their duties also include testifying in court.
District Special Constable
The District Special Constable (DSC) program deploys Special Constables to assist frontline operations. This program is intended to support and supplement frontline police officers, by deploying Special Constables to various non-emergency call types. These calls types can be but not limited to assisting with the custody of persons apprehended under the Mental Health Act, assisting with traffic direction and road closures under the Highway Traffic Act or guarding crime scenes.
By supplementing police officers at these various call types the DSC’s allow the frontline sworn officers to be more available for proactive policing and emergency calls for service.
